Options 2023 Letter – 24th January 2023

Students sitting in a line on a fields during a P.E. lesson

Dear Parent/Carer

The time has arrived for Year 9 students to decide which options subjects they wish to study in Key Stage 4. To help you with this process we have set up a website at

https://sites.google.com/longfieldacademy.org/laoptions/home

Please note that this can only be accessed through the student’s school Google account. We will not permit any external accounts to access this site.

The site has a presentation from myself that explains the options process as well as details of all of the courses on offer, along with a copy of the GCSE options form to be completed. The site is fairly self explanatory and also has the Google Form through which the choices can be made.

Key Dates

  • Tuesday 28th February – Year 9 Parents’ Consultation Event
  • Wednesday 1st March – Deadline for the submission of the Google Form

All the details that you need are on the website and in my presentation. However, I would like to reiterate a couple of points:

  • The Google Form must be completed using the student’s school Google account.
  • This process is not first come, first served. All applications will be considered equally provided the deadline is met.
  • A reserve choice subject must be chosen in case a subject does not run, or there are clashes for a student once the blocks are built for the timetable.
  • If a reserve choice is to be used the student will be notified in advance.

To support your child with the options process, ensuring that your child is fully informed we are currently holding weekly options assemblies where subject leads are talking about each of the subjects we offer for GCSE.

This is a big decision that needs much thought and discussion at home. Please take the time to look at the course details for the subjects you are considering. Do email the subject leader with any questions that you would like clarified and use the parental consultation evening as an opportunity to speak to your child’s teachers about their suitability to study a subject at GCSE or if you have any further questions about what a course entails.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact the school for support with this process.

Kind regards

Mr Mark Shaw
