Uniform Standards – September 2022

Dear Parents/Carers,

I hope that you are well, and that your son/daughter has enjoyed returning to the Academy / (Year 7 parents) – made a good start at Longfield Academy. As we continue to improve our Academy and raise standards and expectations of our students at Longfield Academy, heading into a new academic year, we feel that the time is right to tighten up on our uniform standards. Below are some very clear points and expectations that we will be monitoring heavily over the next few weeks:

  • Trainers are not permitted. Students must wear smart plain black shoes.
  • Shirts/blouses must be tucked in at all times and the Academy tie must always be worn with a shirt
  • Blazers- students must wear their blazers at all times. In lessons students are able to ask their teacher for permission to take them off when they are working but when moving around the academy and when travelling to and from the academy blazers must be worn.
  • Trousers- please see further details below.
  • Skirts- please see further details below.
  • Hoodies, coloured jackets, or specific sports clothing items are not permitted and coats should have minimal branding.
  • No jewellery of any description is permitted except for one small plain pair of stud earrings. Other items of Jewellery will be confiscated.
  • Only discreet makeup is allowed
  • Nail varnish, false or gel nails, fake tan, false eyelashes must not be worn at any time.
  • Nose studs or tongue studs and other forms of body piercing are not permitted.
  • No ‘extreme’ hairstyles are allowed.
  • Chewing gum must not be brought on to the academy site, and if any student is found with chewing gum it will be confiscated.
  • Energy drinks are not allowed on school grounds and will be confiscated.

Skirts

  • All girls in Years 7-11 must wear a new bespoke Academy skirt or plain black straight-legged school trousers. The new kilt-style skirts are bespoke to the academy and have four black buttons on the left hand side, and must be level with the back of the knee when standing. These skirts are available to buy through the academy if there are any students who still need to purchase one. We have done extensive research with retailers to ensure that we have the best deal available for purchasing the skirts; and have been able to secure a very good discount.

Trousers

  • Only trousers that comply with our Academy Uniform Policy may be worn to the academy. To assist in the purchase of school trousers, the images below show the academy’s approved styles, trousers must be black, full-length and tailored. The fit can be straight, slim or boot-cut and fastened by a zip and/or button. Trousers must be of ‘suit material’, not canvas.
Appropriate Trousers

Please note that the following types of trousers are not acceptable:

  • Jeans, cargo style, leggings, jeggings or 3/4 length trousers.
  • Trousers with fully elasticated waists.
  • Trousers which are made of material with a high shine or sheen.

Mobile Phones & Smart Watches

Students are not allowed to use their mobile phones on the academy site during the Academy day. If students’ mobile phones are ‘seen or heard’ they will be confiscated. At the end of the day, after 3.20pm, and once the students have exited the Academy building, students are allowed to use their mobile phones, so that they are able to contact the person who is picking them up if necessary. Smart watches are not permitted at the academy.

If your child arrives at the Academy without full uniform, they are simply asked to report directly to their Student Support Mentor before 8.25am so that we can help rectify any issues they may be facing and support them. If a student is not in full and correct academy uniform they will not be allowed to participate in their normal timetabled lessons. Academy staff will always try to support students by loaning them ‘spare’ items of uniform to help them correct their appearance so that their learning is not disrupted. If a student refuses to correct their uniform, they will be sanctioned accordingly.

We now feel the time is right to prepare fully for this academic year ahead and begin focusing our attention on standards of uniform, the quality of teaching and learning and improving the overall experience for our students at Longfield Academy. Should you need any further information or wish to discuss any of the above, please do not hesitate to contact me at the academy.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

Yours sincerely,

Luke Anderson
