Careers and Work Experience

All students in year 12 will undertake a one week work experience placement. We believe firmly that students must experience the world of work in order to better prepare themselves for their futures. You can find out more about our work experience by clicking here.

We also offer an annual Careers Fair which welcomes a wide range of visitors from different organisations to set up stalls, and provides students the opportunity to engage with them. Our previous fairs have included representatives from a wide range of organisations, including local universities, large employers and public services. You can find out more about our previous careers fairs by looking through the Careers Education section on our website.

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) is a national program which challenges young people to go beyond their comfort zone, build new skills, develop confidence and have exciting new experiences, all the while working towards a recognised qualification which they can put on their CV. eSports

The academy is equipped with an eSports suite, which allows organised teams of students to participate in gaming sessions online against other academies in our Trust. The games which teams play vary depending upon the interests and talents of the students who participate.

Leadership

We are committed to empowering students to lead and to take on responsibility. Our sixth formers are in many ways the leaders of the student community, and set an example for the rest of our students to follow.

Our Student Council includes post-16 students who are part of the Head Students. They play a vital role in facilitating discussions and providing a student voice. These roles provide excellent opportunities for students to develop their leadership skills.

Performing Arts

The academy boasts an exceptional performing arts department which puts on exceptional performances throughout the year. This includes two large productions and a series of other concerts and smaller shows. This provides ample opportunities for drama and musical interests to be explored.

Trips & Visits

A number of subjects offer trips and visits throughout the year. Sometimes these are subject-related, other times they are for team-building or personal development. Examples of trips which the academy has run in the past include:

  • Disneyland Paris
  • Harry Potter Studio Tour London
  • Theatre trips
  • Museums and Galleries (e.g. Tate Modern)
  • Team building at local escape rooms
  • UCAS and external careers fairs

Volunteering & Mentoring

Our ‘Community Tuesdays’ initiative sees our sixth formers interacting with other members of the school. This could be in a mentoring or tuition role, for example helping younger students with their homework, or facilitating a sports club. By empowering students to interact with the rest of the school, it brings about a community spirit, and fosters positive relationships throughout the academy.

Sports

The sixth form looks to provide a range of opportunities for students to engage in extracurricular sporting activities. The exact range of activities will vary depending upon demand year by year, but there are a number of staple activities which normally operate. These include;

  • Gym facilities in the academy fitness suite
  • Football
  • Basketball
  • Table tennis
  • Trampolining
