You must meet the standard entry requirements for Longfield Academy Sixth Form.  In addition, to study this course you will require:

  • Grade 6 or above at GCSE English Language OR English Literature

What is this course about?

Students will study the family, education, crime and deviance, beliefs and society and sociological theories and methods over the course of the two years. Students will have the opportunity to acquire knowledge and a critical understanding of contemporary society. This course would suit students who wish to examine the world in which we live in today and how it is changing.

What content is on the course?

The A Level Sociology (AQA) content is taught in 3 topics in preparation for the examinations:

  • Paper 1 – Education with Theories and Methods
  • Paper 2 – Topics in Sociology (Families and Households and Beliefs in Society
  • Paper 3 – Crime and Deviance with Theories and Methods

Paper 2 has optional topics – we chose to study Families and Households and Beliefs in Society.

Course Assessment

There are three exam papers for sociology. Each exam paper is worth 33.3% of their final mark.

Where could this course lead?

Sociology students go on to a wide range of jobs in policing, research, teaching, medicine, politics and civil service as well as taking jobs in the service sector.
