You must meet the standard entry requirements for Longfield Academy Sixth Form.  In addition, to study this course you will require:

  • Grade 6 or above at GCSE English Literature OR Grade 5 at GCSE English Language.

What is this course about?

The study of British lives in the 20th Century and how they changed. For example, women, race, popular culture,health, education, transport, leisure, living standards. A compulsory sources question of Thatcher is studied from the years 1979-97 (Impact of the governments). American history 1955-92, studying popular culture, Civil Rights, Presidential policy ie Kennedy, Nixon, Carter, women’s rights. Study of Witchcraft in the 16th & 17th centuries.

The A Level History (Edexcel) content is taught in 3 topics:

  • British History 1918-1997
  • American History 1955-1992
  • Witchcraft

Course Assessment

There are 3 examination papers and a coursework essay:

  • Paper 1: British History 1918-1997 – 30% of final grade
  • Paper 2: American History 1955-1992 – 20% of final grade
  • Paper 3: Witchcraft – 30% of final grade
  • Coursework: 4000 word essay – 20% of final grade

Where could this course lead?

History is the most chosen subject from GCSE through to a Masters qualification. The reason for this is because employers love what history shows about an individual’s character. If somebody passes history well it shows a wide range of desirable skills which employers want, examples are – organised, analytical, thoughtful and considered in approach, able to coherently convey an opinion based in knowledge. All of this could literally lead you in a plethora of jobs, the list is endless, from teaching to finance, a reporter/ journalist to a curator of a museum, from a heritage manager to a hedge fund manager, the list is quite literally endless for you.
