You must meet the standard entry requirements for Longfield Academy Sixth Form.  In addition, to study this course you will require:

  • Grade 6 or above at GCSE English Literature OR Grade 6 at GCSE English Language.

What is this course about?

Economics is the study of how society uses the world’s resources, how the global financial system functions and the economic science that underpins small scale business and individuals (micro) and large scale policy (macro) decisions.

What content is on the course?

The A Level Economics (Edexcel A) content is taught in 4 topics:

  • Theme 1 – Introduction to markets and failure (year 12)
  • Theme 2 – The UK Economy, performance and policies (year 12)
  • Theme 3 – Business behaviour and the labour market (year 13)
  • Theme 4 – A global perspective (year 13)

Course Assessment

There are 3 examination papers:

  • Paper 1: Microeconomics – 35% of final grade
  • Paper 2: Macroeconomics – 35% of final grade
  • Paper 3: Microeconomics and Macroeconomics – 30% of final grade

Where could this course lead?

With economics being a social science, it fits particularly well with subjects like geography, psychology and sociology. For those with more mathematical or scientific interests, the financial elements of economics mean you can also study it alongside subjects like mathematics, statistics, business, accounting and finance. Economics A-level will prepare you for an undergraduate degree in any financial qualification and a career in the financial services industry, civil service, accountancy, investment banking, management consultant and investment analyst amongst others.
