Dear Parent / Carer,
I do apologise for interrupting your holiday time. However, I find it necessary to write to you to update you about changes to our plans for the start of term, following the government’s announcement yesterday afternoon about pupils’ return to school in January.
To facilitate plans for a safe and smooth start of the term, the physical school will not be open to pupils on Monday 4th January as previously advised. This is to enable us to undertake essential staff training that will support remote learning and the roll out of mass testing at our school. As per the guidance we have received, the mass testing will commence at Longfield Academy on the week beginning 11th January. We would, by this time, have had the staff INSET as well as 2 full days training with fully qualified Health Care Assistants that the Trust has secured to support us with the mass testing process. The Health Care Assistants will be working with us, full time, for the foreseeable future. I will send you a separate letter next week with details of the process, and how you may consent to your child being tested at school.
The start of term will therefore look like this:
Monday 4th January 2021: INSET day for staff. No pupils on site.
Tuesday 5th January – Friday 8th January 2021: Vulnerable pupils and children of key workers on site. Please note that bus services may be limited during this week.
Year 11, 13 and 12 (pupils who have public examinations in January) who were due to return to the physical school on Monday 4th January will now return on Monday 11th January. Food will not be available for pupils to buy on site prior to Monday 18th January. Therefore, those pupils who have been invited to the physical school must bring with them a packed lunch each day. The academy will provide lunch for pupils who receive free school meals.
Year 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12 (pupils who do not have public examinations) who were due to return to the physical school on Monday 11th January will now return, with the rest of the school, on Monday 18th January.
All pupils will be expected to log on to their Google Classrooms and engage with the live lessons that their teachers will be leading from Tuesday 5th January to Friday 15th January. Pupils will follow their normal timetable during the remote learning period. I have asked all teachers to record attendance and punctuality to the live lessons so that we can follow up on any issues. Given how much learning time pupils have lost since the start of the pandemic, I am keen to ensure that our pupils do not fall behind any further. I am aware that these are challenging times for both parents and pupils but I hope that I can count on your support to ensure that all our pupils log on to their live lessons and are engaged, so that they can benefit fully from the lessons that their teachers will be delivering. Please note that all scheduled pubic examinations will be going ahead as normal. To help ensure that our pupils are fully prepared, teachers will be incorporating revision and examination techniques into the live lessons.
We expect to welcome all pupils back to the physical school from week beginning 18th January and I will update you should anything change.
Thank you for your continued support. I wish you and your families the very best of the New Year.
Dr F. Donkor
